Definition of Advent Wreath

In the tradition Christian Advent is the time in which the coming of Jesus Christ is expected. Therefore, it is a period of preparation spiritual to celebrate Christmas. This period begins four Sundays before this celebration.
The term advent comes from the Latin adventus, which literally means coming or arrival.
The Advent wreath is a symbol of hope, because the light of Jesus Christ will triumph over darkness and death.
The advent wreath, also known as a garland, has a clear meaning symbolic. This element serves to help Christian families in the preparation of Christmas. In fact, it is the first advertisement about Christmas. Represents the hope of the people of Israel in the promised Messiah.
The crown is circular in shape, which expresses the idea of eternity associated with God. Its green branches symbolize hope, as well as spiritual growth and attitude of active hope in the Creator. At the same time, remember the importance of being prepared and with an open spirit to receive Jesus Christ.
If the crown is wrapped with some red ornament, it refers to the love of God towards men, as well as the love of men towards Him. If the wreath incorporates branches or white ribbons, this element symbolizes the idea of purity.
Four separate candles are placed on the crown, symbolizing the four Sundays before the arrival of Christmas. On the first Sunday a candle is lit and so on until four candles are reached. Finally, the wreath is decorated with a white candle that is lit on the night of December 24 and represents the light of Christmas.
In the celebration of the Eucharist on the third Sunday a pink candle is lit, with which the joy for the next arrival of Christmas. During the Eucharist, the ornaments of the priest and the altar are pink and in this way the faithful are invited to participate in the joy of the Christmas period.
From a liturgical point of view
The liturgy of the first Sunday of Advent focuses on the coming of the Lord at the end of time. On the second Sunday, the infidels are invited to maintain an attitude of permanent conversion. The mass of the third Sunday announces the good news of the coming of the Lord and this Sunday is known as gaudete. Finally, on the fourth Sunday the liturgical act refers to the advent of the son of God into the world. During this period the decoration of the altar is more austere and, on the other hand, the singing of glory.
Three biblical figures related to this period
The season of advent is related to three figures Biblical: Saint John the Baptist, the prophet Isaiah and Mary. The first announced the saving plans of the Lord. The second shook men out of their indifferent attitude toward God. Mary symbolizes faith and the testimony of life, since she carries the Savior in her womb.
