The term "crusade" is a term that is normally used to designate a historical phenomenon that took place between the 11th and 13th centuries, at the end of the Middle Ages, and that it represented one of the most important religious and political struggles in the West. The crusade is the expedition carried out by members of different European governments and territories to the East to recover the Christian strongholds taken by the Muslims. Thus, as in the indicated period there were several expeditions whose official objective was to recover those lands, the whole phenomenon is historically known as "The Crusades".

In the late Middle Ages, or in the most final part of this long period known as the Middle Ages, the presence of Muslim groups increasingly important it began to inconvenience and annoy many European territories that saw the advance of Muslims as a accurate danger not only for the religion Christian if not also for the western way of life. As the

empire Islamist and the Muslims thus reach the city of Jerusalem, eternally considered a place of birth of Christianity, the Christian countries of Europe, especially Spain, France and the Sacrum Roman empire, they took the decision together with the different potatoes on duty to carry out a crusade or movement military to those areas to regain them and take away the power of the Muslims to establish their empire there.

The first Crusade, the most famous, occurred in 1095, almost at the end of the 11th century. Four years later, Christian efforts paid off and the city was thus recovered, taking it from the Muslims. However, the weakness of the Christian states created in the area in order to control the Muslim advance, added to the interests of European politicians and rulers to demonstrate their power even among their Christian peers, were the cause of the crusades continuing throughout the century and until the end of the next century. Historians officially acknowledge eight crusades in total, although military movements continued after the last one ended.
