As we know, the French Revolution it was a pivotal moment in history politics of humanity. Not only because of the consequences that it would leave in the matter but also because of the implication that it generated in the citizenship. And as in any hot process, friendships and rivalries were generated between the various positions and factions.
Meanwhile, one of them has been the Girondists, as a political group that had its origin in France, precisely at the behest of the Revolution French. The supporters and legislators of this political group were called Girondists. The name was closely related to the geographical origin of the majority of the deputies of this faction who were originally from the Department Gironde French, located in the south of France.
The Girondists were characterized by their rather moderate and federalist position, representing the interests of the bourgeoisie high and middle, being largely rich bourgeois, merchants and intellectuals.
On the sidewalk in front of the Girondins were the Highlanders, better known as Jacobins, a group in comparison with them rather radical, which proposed to establish a regime of terror for those who did not accept the proposals they promoted. During the first half of the National Convention, both sides, mountaineers and Girondists, had hard confrontations.
Now, it is important that we point out that the Jacobins also came from the bourgeoisie, many of them were merchants and professionals, and despite the differences that faced them in terms of interests and the means used to achieve the ends, both groups coincided in fighting against the royal monarchy, against the prerogatives of the Nobility and the imposition of the liberal principles.
The Girondin faction had the support of the French provinces and although they did not share the power of the king did propose a convenient alliance with the monarch and the nobility, but limiting their authorities and Benefits. What they were not willing to give in was to give him a voice and vote the poorest since they did not want to lose their benefits.
The Jacobins or Highlanders were supported by the council and the population of Paris and they proposed to eradicate the monarchy and establish the vote for all social classes without exceptions.
