Example of Conditional Propositions
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
A proposition, as opposed to a sentence, is a syntactic construction that depends on another part of the sentence and which is generally linked by means of a nexus (for example, a conjunction or a locution). The propositions, together, form compound sentences; a single sentence can be made up of several propositions.
The conditional statements, as its name implies, express a necessary or hypothetical condition for what the topic sentence indicates to take effect. That is, what is expressed by the predicate of the The main sentence will be carried out if the condition set forth in the conditional proposition is fulfilled. For example:
- "They are going to take five points away from you if you don't deliver the material on time": The conditional proposition if you don't deliver the material on time indicates something to be done as a condition (deliver material) so that the main sentence (take away five points).
- “If you accompany me I would be very happy ”: the proposition indicates a condition (if you accompany me) so that the statement in the main sentence (rejoice)
- "I will have the luggage ready in case they call me for the trip”: The proposition headed by the nexus if informs us of a necessary condition (call me for the trip) so that the main sentence (have the luggage ready).
How are conditional statements structured?
If we analyze the previous examples, we can see that the conditional statements form the following structure:
- Main sentence + conditional nexus + conditional proposition
- We will eat as a family (or. principal) unless (nexus) my father and brother are late (conditional statement)
The conditional links to introduce this type of proposition are the following:
- Yes: “If you interrupt again, the teacher is going to be very upset "," My dogs get very anxious if I don't take them out for a walk”.
- If: “We have cheaper packages in case these are out of your budget”.
- As long as: "They can take a day off as long as they notify the administration in advance”.
- What: “As it does not clarify what happened, the others will continue to think badly of him "
- On condition that: “As long as you don't tell anyoneI'll tell you what the secret of the sauce is ”.
- Unless: "They will not be able to save themselves unless a miracle really happens”.
- Provided: "He said yes to everything they requested as long as they didn't bother”.
