We say that someone is a rebel when he opposes the established power or a authority. Also a rebel is that individual who adopts a attitude contrary to the majority. In any case, rebellion is associated with the human spirit and its ability to face any type of imposition.
The rebellious child
If a child does not obey her parents normally and shows an attitude of rejection towards any rule imposed on him, he is considered a rebellious child. This is a very common behavior, since kids are in a stage of socialization and they have difficulty understanding certain rules or impositions.
The rebel before justice
If someone does not abide by the law for some reason, from a legal point of view he is considered a rebel. On the other hand, a person is declared in a state of rebellion when in a criminal or procedural process he does not appear before the courts.
Rebellious attitudes within society
Life in society implies a plurality of behaviors. In some way, all those behaviors that confront a norm, a dogma or some majority ideas are rebellious attitudes.
In the religious context, if a person does not abide by a majority dogma, his rebellion is called heresy. In the sphere politics, individuals who fight a form of power are called revolutionaries. In the world of fashion, the person who goes against the current also expresses a form of rebellion. In all these cases there is one element in common: the rebel fights a majority tendency and assumes a certain risk, since he knows that his attitude can lead to problems (with religious power, with political power or with the people with whom coexists).
The high price the rebels pay
<Submissive and obedient attitudes are not very heroic, but they are usually useful to ensure the survival. At the other extreme, insubordinate and rebellious positions have greater appeal, but are usually very risky. Some historical figures are remembered for their rebellion, but for the most part they paid a high price for it.
Characters such as Jesus Christ, Gandhi, Luther King, Galileo or Pancho Villa were men who took courageous positions against power. Their rebellion was victorious from the point of view of the judgment of history, but personally they all paid a very high price: death, punishment or rejection by society.
