The United Kingdom is a country on the European continent and is made up of four nations: Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, the United Kingdom (also known as Great Britain) also includes a number of overseas territories, most of them being islands.
The legacy of the United Kingdom
Regardless of geographical, historical or population of this country, we must not forget what its legacy is for the whole of humanity. Here are a number of milestones that originated in the UK and have been relevant beyond its borders.
The British were the initiators of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century. It was a revolution because it supposed a radical change in the means of production, in the labor activity and in the emergence of a new world order.
The English language has become the language frank universal. It is the first language in nations such as the United States, Canada, Australia or Great Britain itself, but it is studied throughout the world (after Chinese, it is the language with the largest number of speakers).
The British have been the promoters of a large number of sports activities (football, rugby, cross country, golf, cricket, among many others) and even some key concepts in the sport (fair play would be a good example).
The United Kingdom is the cradle of great universities such as Oxford and Cambridge and of first-rate scientific associations (the Royal Society of London is the most prestigious). Continuing in the cultural field, it must be remembered that the British have been great creators in fields such as music, literature or the movie theater.
Today the United Kingdom still maintains close ties with its former colonies, the well-known Commonwealth of 53 sovereign states.
Among the illustrious characters of British origin include Newton, Adam Smith, Shakespeare, Stephen Hawking, Winston Churchill or the Beatles.
Some of his traditions, traditions and traits have become international references and icons: the five o'clock tea, British phlegm, the premier league, Sherlock Holmes or the monarchy itself.
In conclusion, it is worth recalling a few words from Winston Churchill when he addressed the British before the threat of the Nazis in World War II and that express the British spirit very well, We shall never surrender.
