Example of an unspoken subject
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
The tacit subject, omitted or elliptical subject, is when the subject is not mentioned in the sentence. The subject is present, but not written. For example: I ate vegetables yesterday. It is obvious that I speak in the first person, where the subject is I, I was the one who ate vegetables. However, it is not written in the sentence.
It is also called morphological subject, since although there is no name or pronoun, the corresponding pronoun is deduced from the verb conjugation. Thus, to illustrate it, when we have the verb “walked”, although the subject is not written, we know that it is the third person singular (he or she); With the verb “we ate” we know that it speaks of the first person plural (we) or with the verb “they will sleep” we know that it is the third person plural (they).
- When the subject is written in the sentence, it is called explicit subject.
- When the sentence only describes the action without mentioning the subject or an identifying pronoun, it is said to have a tacit subject, that is, a subject that is not mentioned in the sentence, but that is understood from its context.
The unspoken subject is also found in coordinate and subordinate sentences, when the subject in the first sentence, and the context of the other sentences place the action in the same subject.
