Playoffs in soccer and other sports
The most common examples of playoffs are in soccer.
In the local first division tournaments of some countries such as Argentina there is a repechage instance in which those teams will play whose average in the table marks their decrease of category and those who have the possibility of moving up the level because they have had a good tournament in the category immediately after the first A.
The repechage modality consists of the team to be relegated to face the team that has the possibility of being promoted. To guarantee fairness and that both have the same possibilities, two games will be played so that each one can be local once. In football there is a consideration in this regard that when you are a local in a match that will certainly play in your favor in development.
Following in football, in an elimination tournament that is played in some parts of the world to decide which teams will play the next World Cup there is also the figure of the playoffs.
In the South American qualifiers, there are four teams that have a safe place in the World Cup and that of course will be the first four classified. Now, that team that finished in fifth place will be given a new chance to qualify by playing the popular playoff game against another team that is not part of the team. Confederacy South American Soccer (CONMEBOL).
In the last two editions of the aforementioned qualifying rounds, Uruguay played the repechage and was the winner of the same, which allowed it to compete in the World Cup.
There are other sports, such as tennis, which also uses the repechage modality to play tournaments, such is the case of the Davis Cup, thus allowing more teams to have the possibility to play it.
