The concept analyzed here is related to the consequences of some catastrophes in the territories. Devastation is the widespread destruction of a place.
Main causes of devastation
Certain natural phenomena have disastrous effects and turn into a catastrophe due to their force destroyer. Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, fires or Volcanic eruptions they are clear examples of causes that cause devastation. The human being tries to adopt measures to mitigate its effects and, sometimes, it is achieved (buildings in earthquake areas are built so that they are not destroyed). The problem with these phenomena is the impossibility of accurately predicting them.
Death in wars
War and the destruction associated with it is another cause of the devastation. Its effects are not simply on the infrastructures but especially on the population.
In some circumstances a devastating effect occurs as a result of intense social upheaval. Usually these are acts of vandalism in which certain groups destroy street furniture, shop windows, etc.
The concept of devastation is also used figuratively. Thus, one can speak of the devastation cultural, implying that the culture sector is in a deep crisis or in a very difficult situation.
From a psychological perspective
A person can also feel devastated, that is, depressed or with a deep sensation of defeat. It is not a emotion spontaneous, but usually occurs in connection with intense and painful personal drama.
Psychological devastation implies the mental breakdown of an individual (think of a profound failure, an unexpected disappointment, a betrayal or something similar). As in natural disasters or wars, in the face of psychological devastation it is necessary to rebuild this situation, for which the intervention of a professional of the psychology.
