The acronym UNASUR means Union of South American Nations and it is a supranational body that integrates the 12 countries that make up South America.
The purpose of UNASUR as an entity is to ensure the common interest of the nations that comprise it. In this way, the purpose of this body is to promote competitiveness, dialogue and the development of the whole of South America. The genuine idea of UNASUR reminds us of other entities with the same purpose: the European Union or the Commonwealth. It must be taken into account that if several nations are within the same space and have a series of shared ties it is logical and positive for all of them that there is a joint action and coordinated. In the global world, nations have greater force and relevance if they achieve strategic alliances on various issues (Commerce, customs, exchange cultural, Energy And a long etcetera).
Some relevant data about the UNASUR space
This immense area reaches 17 million square kilometers, which is equivalent to
territory of Russia, the largest country in the world. It is made up of some 400 million inhabitants, who 95% share the same religion, the Catholicism. UNASUR has four official languages: Dutch because it is the language from Suriname, English because it is the language of Guyana, Portuguese for Brazil and the remaining nine countries where Spanish is spoken as an official language. As a curiosity, it should be noted that the only territory in South America that is not part of UNASUR is the French Guiana, which being a region of France is part of the overseas territories of the Union European. All the nations that make up UNASUR own 27% of the world's fresh water and their oil reserves will not be depleted in the next hundred years.
One of the peculiarities of UNASUR lies in the elements shared by the majority of its members (a similar historical past, very similar traditions, as well as religious and cultural ties).
From a historical point of view, UNASUR is a young organization, since its founding treaty was signed in 2008, with its headquarters located in the capital of Ecuador, Quito.
Conclution
The data on UNASUR indicate that it is an entity with great potential from the perspective of the geopolitics international. However, the weaknesses it presents can slow down its development (there is no single currency as in the case of the euro and politically not all the nations that comprise it have managed to consolidate a democratic system stable).
