From an etymological point of view, the word psalm comes from the Hebrew term hizmór and means to sing or play a musical instrument. This meaning evolved and over time became a singing of veneration to God. Thus, in the tradition Jewish and Christian religious a psalm is a sung and poetic way of praising God in different ways (showing him devotion, gratitude, expressing the need to fulfill the law divine, with a historical, prophetic sense, etc).
You can talk about a double dimension from the psalm: it is a public act of worship related to the liturgy (a group of believers participates) and, at the same time, it is an individual act, where each person communicates with God in a way intimate.
Shared by Judaism and Christianity
In the Old Testament, the Jewish and Christian religion share common elements and one of them is the set of psalms, a total of 150, being the psalter the book where they are collected. Some historians recall that other ancient civilizations prior to the Jewish and Christian tradition already communicated with their gods through chants.
The psalms have no author
There is no Author particular of the psalms, but it is an element of popular culture (although we must not forget that Solomon, David or Moses were some of the inspirers of these songs). In addition to their intention of praise, they incorporate a formative orientation, since they aim to educate the people in religious values and consolidate your faith. In this sense, these hymns of praise also serve to unite the group, give them identity and a sense of belonging.
A reflection on the meaning of the psalms
Believing people have a need to communicate with God in a direct and simple way. Speaking with a supreme being is not an easy task, so the psalm is presented as an ideal means for the human being to connect with the Almighty. In this way, the psalm acts as a sung prayer that fulfills a communicative function.
The psalm has a reminder function, that is, the believer keeps in mind that above other considerations, love for God is the fundamental guide to his existence.
The psalm also has a calming and reassuring effect. In fact, Jesus Christ himself turned to the psalms in some difficult situations for support.
Finally, the psalm has a message of optimism and hope, as it is addressed to God, who watches over and cares for men at all times.
