The Origin of UNICEF: assistance in rebuilding Europe after World War II
Unicef is the abbreviated name in English for the body created by the General Assembly of the United Nations, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, in Spanish, the Fund International Emergency of the United Nations for Children, created in 1946, on the occasion of the birth of the need to help all those children in Europe who were left unprotected and adrift after the Second World War.
That is to say, at first its origin was clearly as an organism that helps for some time in the titanic task of rebuilding Europe and in the special case of this entity, offering support to the kids. Meanwhile and given the imprint it achieved thanks to the various activities it promoted, Unicef is would end up becoming a very important, vital and benchmark international organization in its field: the kids.
Starting in 1953, the United Nations General Assembly decided to make it a permanent body within its system and especially dedicated to providing help and protection to children..
Assistance to children and women in developing countries
At present, its activity is focused on offering aid and humanitarian assistance to unprotected children and mothers in developing countries.
Special fight against prostitution and child exploitation
Although the aid that Unicef practices does not distinguish between countries, types of problems, among other issues, that is, any child around the world needs it, Unicef will be there and will be ready to help you, it is worth noting that it does have some priorities in its task, for example avoid under all points of view prostitution and child exploitation in those areas of extreme poverty in which these tremendous scourges occur very recurrently, for example in Africa.
Although, of course, his “other” priorities include promoting access to education of all children, eradicate child labor outright, fight for the integration of all the boys and to promote any type of improvement that means a better care in their health.
Disaster assistance
Another action in which this body is key is with regard to disaster assistance. Saving lives, reducing loss and suffering of people affected by misfortune and protecting children's rights is that the organization acts in these cases, and its presence.
How does it work?
In order to get an idea of the diffusion that UNICEF's work has today throughout the world, we must say that it works in more of 190 countries, doing so through programs and committees that are established in the various nations and always act in coordination with the governments of each nation to further optimize the scopes of your task.
Goodwill ambassadors: prominent personalities from the art world
On the other hand, we must mention that the task of Unicef is especially spread in the world by the creation of the figure of ambassador of goodwill of Unicef. This position is deployed by prominent and notable personalities from various areas, such as the music, acting and sport, who selflessly adhere to the organization's proposal and then from their position are in charge of promoting and disseminating Unicef's proposals.
The fact of choosing personalities recognized and loved by the public generates that people approach Unicef and want to collaborate with its initiatives.
It is proven, especially by the world of advertising that famous people or people who have authority and recognition in a subject are respected and followed by the general public. So, this is what Unicef aimed to create this figure.
Among the most notable ambassadors we must mention Shakira, Lionel Messi, Diego Torres, Nicole Kidman, Kate Perry, Dany Glover, David Beckham, Mía Farrow, Ricky Martin, among others.
Awards received: Nobel Peace Prize and Prince of Asturias
Because of the task that it has carried out since its creation, Unicef has been distinguished with very important recognitions such as: the Nobel Peace Prize, received in 1965 and the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord, recently, in 2006.
