Spoken language has simple rules, since the purpose is to understand others and for them to understand us. As simple as that. The same does not happen with written language, because it requires a greater technical effort on the part of the writer and, at the same time, a certain concentration on the reader.
The written language is an art, as long as the order, rhythm, plot and style of the work have enough quality technique. And for a text make sense and coherence (it does not matter if it is literary or a email for commercial purposes) it is imperative that punctuation marks are used correctly. There are not a large number of signs. In fact, in a keyboard from computer personal is the whole set of elements that make up punctuation marks. Its use is based on common sense. Let's take an illustrative example with the parenthesis sign ( ). It is used to enter different information from the one we are dealing with (we are talking about a person and in parentheses we indicate his date of birth).
One of the signs with greater relevance is the point. It can be said that it is the most important. Its function is apparently simple: order the different paragraphs of a text. His simplicity not to be confused with simplicity, as one way or another of using a point can change the meaning of a key idea. The point not only orders and gives meaning to a text, it is a way of setting a rhythm of reading.
The period is a brief pause that indicates that one message has ended and a new one begins. In this case we refer to the period and followed. If the subject or focus changes or the storyteller wants to explain something different, they should use the full stop. In other words, a simple point serves to continue with the same course or to go to other places on the narration.
And the meaning of the period does not end with your version of full stop or apart. There is also the semicolon (; ). It is a sign that is being devalued because less and less is used in the texts. And it is not because it is useless or imprecise, since its meaning makes a lot of sense: it expresses a brief pattern, at an intermediate level between the comma and the period.
For his part the two points (:) is announcing the development of a fundamental issue that we want to highlight and develop more precisely.
To highlight specific words or phrases, the resource of the quotation marks, also to encompass testimonial quotes or popular phrases.
And like every story, story or explanation has an end, in this case we will use the full stop.
