Example of Grammatical Number in Verbs

    Spanish Classes   /   by admin   /   July 04, 2021

The number is a grammatical category that is expressed in verbs, as well as in nouns, adjectives and pronouns, to indicate whether an element is singular or plural. In the case of verbs, the number tells us if the subject to which the verb refers is singular (consists of a single entity) or plural (They are two entities or more).

To express the category of number, the verb modifies its form in the conjugation. The verb consists of a root that does not change and an ending (a morpheme that changes its form to indicate number, person, time and mode). Let's see an example:

    • I spokeor, I spokestill, I spoketo, I spokemasters… The root of the verb is spoke, therefore it does not change. And the ending of the verb changes to express number: talked Y speaks is singular, whereas they talk, we talk it is plural.

The grammatical number in verbs is closely tied to the grammatical person, that is, to whom does the action; this person will be singular or plural: the action is carried out by one person or several people
