In a context of evolution constant in human relationships, numerous terms are emerging that are adapted to new social phenomena. Thus, the feminist movement in its different aspects has created a neologism, sisterhood.
It comes from the Latin sor, which means sister and with this term all the relationships of solidarity between women. Its origin in the word sister is not accidental, since female relationships are valued with a certain character of brotherhood between women.
The fellowship or sorority exists with respect to an enemy, the patriarchy. In this sense, it can be said that this term arose in opposition to the idea of patriarchy. According to the patriarchal model, society is directed by the dominant men, either in the figure of the husband or the father.
The values associated with sisterhood
Women who practice sisterhood do so in order to join forces against any form of male domination. In this way, fraternity between women is valued as an element of union against the oppressive power of men.
The idea of sisterhood is based on a strategy in two directions:
1) create ties between women to eradicate the patriarchal model of society and
2) promote actions inspired by solidarity, equality, fidelity and confidence among women.
Examples of sisterhood
- Neighborhood or social groups in which women associate to solve their daily problems (the discrimination labor, salary differences compared to men, difficulties related to motherhood, etc.).
- Vindictive platforms so that the whole of society knows their approaches (there are women who fight sexist language, advertising based on women as a sexual claim or difficulties in reconciling work and family life).
- Female associations based on sisterhood can be considered with all kinds of initiatives: cultural exhibitions, sports clubs, support groups, etc.
All initiatives that can be promoted inspired by the idea of sisterhood are guided by the desire for solidarity among women.
The struggles of the feminist movement have been forging the feeling of brotherhood among women
Just over 100 years ago, women who demanded the right the female vote were classified as hysterical. Thanks to her struggle, the female vote is currently a reality that practically no one dares to question.
Currently the demonstrations pose new challenges and combats: the denunciation of female genital mutilation in some countries, the female role in Muslim society or the violence male chauvinist.
