In a vehicle, whatever it may be, a car, a van or larger vehicles such as trucks the suspension is basically a set of elements that is responsible for absorbing (put it in some way graph) any irregularities found in the land through which we are traveling.
It's very common hear tell someone that the car "does not copy" the unevenness of the floor, preserving passengers and preventing them from feeling or suffering any kind of bump, ripple or whatever is there.
On synthesis, suspension is a system that has two very clear functions that are closely related: the comfort of the vehicle occupants and a correct control of the vehicle.
The system suspension of a vehicle it's a link between the chassis itself and the wheels which are those that directly receive the irregularities (or not) of the terrain through which they are traveling. In this way and being located between both parts (chassis and wheels) it makes the "information" that arrives from the floor reaches the passenger compartment most attenuated so that the driver and other occupants can have a trip pleasurable.
In today's cars the suspensions used are very varied. The most widespread today is the use of independent suspensions which differs from the system where the wheels (both wheels on the same axle, actually) are joined by elastic means.
In general, the front suspensions on vehicles are more complex than the rear ones since the front wheels are generally driving (with some exceptions) and, (this is a no-brainer but it counts ...) they are the ones that make the car turn. For this reason, in the days that run the front axle of the cars is independent. The most used suspension on the front axle is the MacPherson.
On the other hand we have at rear suspensions that (as we already said) by not having to absorb “The extra work” of directionality and transmission has a mechanics and much simpler elements.
Needless to say that the iconic element of a suspension system is among others the shock absorber, a device that is intended for absorption of the Energy to decrease unwanted oscillations of a movement repeated.
