The concept of document is normally associated with some type of writing with which it is intended to communicate something. However, the Photography it also allows to tell facts or events and, therefore, it is possible to talk about photography documentary film.
The fundamental idea
We can explain reality in many ways: with a painting naturalistic style, with a narration descriptive, through symbols or through images. In this sense, the image of a photograph allows to tell something, be it a story, a moment, a state of mind or any event that deserves to be told.
Street photography, documentary photography and photojournalism
If someone totally spontaneously takes a photo of something that he observes on the street, in this case we could speak of street photography. On the other hand, if a photographer has the purpose of capturing certain images related to something, in this case it would be documentary photography. Consequently, the difference between one and the other depends on the intention of the photographer.
If at the time of taking a photograph something unexpected happens that has a certain social interest, in this case we would be talking about photojournalism. This implies that a documentary-type photo could be turned into a newsworthy photo.
In specialized terminology, the concept of documentary photography is equivalent to others, such as testimonial photography or socio-documentary photography. Regardless of the term used, it is about capturing images that are of interest to society as a whole.
A way to generate social awareness
We have all heard on occasion that a picture is worth a thousand words. The truth of this statement is evident, since a simple image can convey complex ideas that would require extensive descriptions or dissertations. In this sense, documentary photography serves to denounce all kinds of situations. In other words, this branch of photography is an effective weapon to generate social conscience.
The conscience social can have several purposes: to denounce injustices, to provoke changes in people's mentality or simply to try to better understand a phenomenon of a certain complexity.
The professional who is dedicated to this area has, logically, a very personal perspective. Consequently, it is not totally objective when it comes to capturing images. Despite this, you can count on something with a attitude honest. Keep in mind that photography never expresses the true reality of something, but rather it is a interpretation of reality.
