Definition of Read Between the Lines

Both written and oral information can be understood and interpreted from different points of view. So, we could analyze each of the words that are used, its grammatical structure, the context of the message or the main ideas. However, on many occasions what is said or written hides information and, consequently, the recipient of the message has to interpret what is not said or told. When the latter occurs we are reading between the lines.

An art of expression

When a doctor has to give bad news to a patient, it is usual for him to use words in a way singular, since he has to tell the truth but in a non-shocking way, because with it it would cause greater anguish to the patient.

In the speeches of political leaders it is quite common for messages to be communicated with simplified ideas or with euphemisms so that citizens have a certain vision of the reality.

The seller who explains the characteristics of a product to a potential buyer tries to minimize the negative aspects of the product and, logically, emphasizes the positive aspects.

In the examples of the doctor, the politician and the salesperson there is a common denominator: some of the information that is communicated remains hidden or semi-hidden. Despite this apparent invisibility, the recipient of the message may be skilled and have the ability to read between the lines. For this reason, it can be said that reading between the lines is quite a art.

In the context of dictatorships

Although the different dictatorial regimes have their own characteristics, in all of them the Liberty from expression is significantly limited and, at the same time, some kind of censorship is imposed on the media communication. Of course, in this context the citizen he has to sharpen his wit and make an effort to properly interpret the messages controlled by the dictatorship of his country.

This ability to interpretation is precisely the fundamental aspect of the reading between lines.

When two people begin to know each other in a romantic relationship, words are important, but non-verbal communication is also relevant. With gestures, looks and attitudes we also say things in the language of love and, consequently, It is very useful to know how to read between the lines when interpreting the true meaning of some signs.
