Within the framework of the UN there are a number of organisms freelancers specialized in some aspect that affects humanity. WHO focuses on health, UNESCO on health cultural heritage, FAO in the feeding, UNWTO in tourism and ILO in the world of work. The acronym ILO stands for precisely International Labor Organization. Its international dimension means that this organization guides its activity in a global way, understanding that all the peoples of the Earth and all workers belong to the gender human.
Objectives and challenges of the ILO
The primary objective of the ILO is to dignify working conditions throughout the world. This implies that this body is inspired by social justice and the ideas of equality Y dignity human.
The ILO has a number of specific functions, the most significant of which are the following:
1) promote labor rights,
2) combat any form of exploitation (child labor, modes of production slavery, human trafficking, etc.),
3) promote equality between men and women,
4) promote dialogue between employers and workers and
5) Recommend measures that improve the living conditions of workers.
The actions promoted by the ILO try to find a Balance between workers and companies, since possible imbalances can come from the abuse of one or the other.
The world of work in the 21st century presents a very unequal reality, as there are countries where the rights of workers are recognized and countries where all kinds of abuses occur. Some of the most common problems are:
- A significant difference in wages between men and women.
- Situations of mobbing or work decline.
- People who work without any type of legal protection.
- Workers who cannot associate to defend their rights.
- Workers who suffer some kind of discrimination because of their age, religion or social condition.
The ILO emerged as a tool to promote peace among peoples
At the end of World War l, the Treaty of Versailles was signed to order the new international panorama. One of the consequences of the Treaty was the creation of the ILO.
In that historical context, decent working conditions were considered the best antidote to war, because a prosperous country, in peace and with work is not tempted to go to the war.
