Since 1995, the European Union has a body whose function is to ensure the health of people and animals. The responsible entity is the EMA, whose acronym in English is equivalent to European Medicines Agency and which in Spanish translates as European Medicines Agency.
Like any other institution, the EMA is organized into different committees: the HMPC is dedicated to medicines obtained from plants, the PDCO is a committee of pediatrics, the CAT focuses on new therapies and the PRAC deals with everything related to risks to human and animal health.
Observing its main attributions
This body supervises and authorizes the different medicines that are distributed in the European Union. In this sense, drug manufacturers must request an authorization from the EMA so that they can be marketed.
One of its specific functions is to ensure the safety of drugs so that they are effective throughout the intended cycle of use. It should be noted that this body has a public interest and, therefore, does not defend the interests of any
government or the pharmaceutical sector. The standards developed by this entity are useful for all types of institutions and sectors: pharmaceutical companies, healthcare professionals, patients, universities, etc.In order for the EMA's powers to be effective, this body cooperates with the entities that regulate medicines in each nation of the European Union.
To guarantee their autonomy in the supervision, the EMA acts independently and following the guidelines established by the scientific community.
To the margin control and supervision of medicines, this body promotes the investigation scientific There are two areas of special attention in this regard: the creation of medicines related to pediatric care and rare diseases.
