Characteristics of colloquial language
One of the most important characteristics of colloquial language is improvisation. Using this type of language in the daily life of all people, leads to continuous repetition of words, to use a code that is not very elaborate and not formal. This makes this type of language seem inappropriate, especially when in a more formal and / or technical context.
Second, it highlights the imprecision. In colloquial language the use of imprecise words predominates, and the little use of adjectives and adverbs. In a colloquial conversation, the expressive function of mainly affective language predominates. The use of expressions stands out
exclamatory and interrogatives, as well as diminutives and augmentative suffixes (little, big, etc.). In a colloquial conversation, abrupt subject changes and unfinished reasoning occur frequently.Thirdly, we must highlight the contact with the issuer. This is an important feature since colloquial language relies heavily on non-language. verbal, that is, of the extratextual codes, among which the corporal expression and the gestures.
Finally, highlights orality. Being a rather relaxed type of language, it lacks many of the linguistic norms, so it is not common to find it in written works.
