Simple And Compound Sentence Example
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
In Spanish, we can classify two types of sentences according to their structure; well, we have the simple sentences and the compound sentences.
Simple sentences are those that have a single predicate. This predicate can refer to one or more subjects; the nucleus or the central part of a predicate is a conjugated verb, which expresses an action, a state or a process related to a subject, who suffers or performs the action. The predicate, then, tells us something about a subject.
Compound sentences are those that have more than one predicate and, therefore, more than one conjugated verb. Compound sentences are those that are made up of two or more simple sentences, which are joined by some kind of nexus.
Types of simple sentences:
Simple sentences can be of the following types, depending on the subject class that contain:
-
Simple sentences with explicit subject. They are those that have a subject that appears expressly or directly in the sentence. For example:
- Omar told the truth.
- Me I want to eat cake.
-
Simple sentences with implicit subject. They are those that have a subject that has to be inferred, since it does not appear directly in the sentence. For example:
- Do you have time? (Implicit subject: you).
- We went to the park. (Implied subject: us).
-
Simple sentences with indeterminate subject. They are those in which the subject cannot be determined. For example:
- There is food in the refrigerator.
- They say that sugary drinks are bad.
-
Simple sentences with agent subject. They are in which the subject performs the action of the verb; they are active voice sentences. For example:
- Suitcase weighs 20 kilograms.
- Bruno eat an apple.
-
Simple sentences with patient subject. They are in which the subject suffers the action of the verb; is the beneficiary or recipient of the action. They are passive voice sentences. For example:
- The Apple It is eaten by Bruno.
- The exam was evaluated by the teacher.
-
Simple sentences with compound subject. They are sentences in which the subject is formed by two nuclei or nouns, which are united by a nexus. For example:
- You and I We are good friends.
- Responsibility and punctuality they are good values.
Types of compound sentences:
There are three types of compound sentences:

According to the type of coordinating conjunction that joins the coordinated sentences, they are divided into:

The subordinate clause only acquires its full meaning in relation to the main clause. There are three types of subordinate clauses:
