In Spain the education system is governed by a organic Law (the LOMCE), which is the general framework of the educational model. However, the different autonomous regions have a certain independence to organize and manage the education in their territories. The NIA is, precisely, an initiative of the Generalitat Valenciana in the field of education.
Understanding the purpose of the NIA?
These acronyms correspond to the Student Identification Number. The idea of it is simple: that each student is assigned an identification number throughout their schooling. It is an initiative that has put into operation the government Valencian to facilitate all administrative procedures related to the students who study in this community. At the same time, this numerical identification is useful for the student himself.
The NIA was implemented as a system in the 2008-2009 academic year and was gradually introduced at the different educational levels. This number identifies all students, those who study in the public system, in the subsidiary or in private education. In this sense, the NIA is like a DNI for schoolchildren. Obtaining this number can be done through the internet.
The usefulness of the NIA is very broad
In the first place, with it it is possible for the student to access his administrative file (this access may be related to the processing of a study grant or a grant from transport school).
Second, this identification streamlines some bureaucratic procedures (for example, the enrollment process in an educational center).
Finally, the NIA has been designed so that the student's data is kept anonymous, since it must be taken into account that there is a law that forces the administration and companies to be very rigorous with the management of citizen data.
The NIA system is framed in a general project of the Valencian Community, known as ITACA or Innovation Administrative Technology for Centers and Students. It is an organizational model that allows data management in relation to the entire educational community (schools, parents, students and teachers).
Acronyms of daily use in Spain
The knowledge and habitual use of acronyms is different in each country. In the case of Spain, some of them are part of daily life. Thus, each citizen has their DNI or National Document of identity and if he is a foreigner, his identification number is the NIE. In the economic sphere, there is VAT or Value Added Tax, personal income tax or Personal Income Tax.
