Example of Simple and Compound Sentences
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
Sentences that contain a subject and a predicate are called simple sentences. If the subject and the predicate are compound but the main idea of the statement is a unit, the sentence is also simple. It is important to note that in simple sentences of subject and compound predicate, the uniqueness of the idea is maintained. However, a sentence is composed when it is made up of the set of two or more simple sentences. Let's point out some examples of these types of sentences.
Examples of simple and compound sentences:
Teachers and students opposed the union measures
Compound subject predicate
Teachers and students opposed the union measures and still attended class.
Compound subject compound predicate
Martín Pescador presented his admission exam and the secretary informed him that he would return tomorrow for the result.
The lawyer Meltez went on leave, but Juan Justinino will attend him.
I informed him that I would return at night but he did not want to wait for me.
Suddenly the sky darkened and then the rain began.
In these examples of sentences, each of the simple sentences that make up the compound sentence has an independent meaning. They can be separated without being meaningless.
Attorney Meltez went on leave.
Juan Justinino will attend you.
I informed him that I would return in the evening.
He didn't want to wait for me.
Suddenly the sky darkened.
The rain started.
However, there are other compound sentences in our language that are made up of an independent simple sentence and one or sometimes more dependent simple sentences. Let's see an example:
I brought the clothes you loaned me last Monday.
I brought the clothes - it is the independent simple sentence, called the main sentence
Which you lent me last Monday - dependent sentence, since its meaning is totally dependent on the previous sentence.
