In Spanish, there are not many words that contain the combination of consonants G + L followed by a vowel. For example: glaciation, gleba, glicerina, gloestuary, gluthing.
The letter G has a soft sound when the next letter is a consonant or the vowels A, O and U. To combine that sound with the E and I, the U must be inserted between the G and these vowels.
