Example of Words With Prefix A
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
Words with the prefix to- are those words that contain before the root of the word the affix to-. That is, they are words that begin with this lexical element.
In Spanish we call affixes (within these the prefixes and suffixes are classified) to certain elements or morphemes that by themselves have no meaning, nor are they autonomous; they are always added to a word and when they are added they can add a certain meaning to it or change its structure. In this way, on many occasions the prefixes, those affixes that go before the root of the word, provide a specific meaning to the word to which they complete.
In the case of prefix to-, this can have two functions within the words that it complements:
a) The prefix to- add in certain words a sense of denial or lack to the noun it accompanies. In this sense, this prefix comes from the Greek ἀ-.
The prefix an- is used in the same way, to provide a sense of negation. The difference is that the -to precedes consonants and –An to the vowels. We can see this, for example, in the words
tosymmetrical (lacking symmetry) and analphabet (which does not have an alphabet).b) The prefix a- also has the function of form new derived words. That is, words that originate from another that is the root or base. Words can be formed with new grammatical functions; of a noun or adjective, for example, verbs or adjectives can be generated.
In this case, this prefix comes from the Latin prefix ad-. In this function, the prefix a- does not have a precise meaning. For example, in words like: tocut off (derived from cut off) Y tomasar (derived from mass).
