Sentences With Collective Nouns

The collective nouns are those nouns that name a collective entity in the singular, that is, they name a set or grouping of things, people, animals, etc. For example:
- Student body is a collective noun because it names a set of students.
- Clergy is a collective noun because it names a clergymen set.
On the contrary, it is important to also distinguish between individual nouns, which name entities individually; and, to name a community, they need to be in the plural. For example, the noun student whose plural is students.
Types of collective nouns
There are two types of collective nouns, depending on what they name:
- Determined collective nouns. They name something specific or determined; from their meaning we can know what it is to which they refer. For example:
- Sewerage (names a set of sewers and pipes)
- Pack (names a group of dogs)
- Cutlery (names a set of silverware)
- Indeterminate collective nouns. They name an indeterminate entity, they refer in a general way to a collectivity, that is why it is generally specified in the sentence what they refer to. For example:
- Hundred (names a set of one hundred elements): “A hundred from books".
