Paronymous words or paronyms are words that have a certain resemblance, although their uses are different.
There are three types of paronyms:
1. Of common origin: They are words that have a common etymological origin, that is, they derive from an ancient word, generally Latin or Greek, and that with use and time two or more similar words have been derived, but which are used in different contexts or applications.
2. With resemblance in shape: These are words that are written or pronounced very similar, although their origins and meanings are very different, so they are often misleading.
3. With similarity in pronunciation. In this case, they are words that sound very similar to other words, even some phrases that may sound like words, which also creates confusion.
1. Example of paronyms with etymological similarity:
Warm - Broth (from Latin caldus, hot. We use warm when we refer to the weather, to indicate that it is not cold, or that the treatment of a person is kind. Broth is a term that was used in ancient inns to indicate to travelers that there was stew or hot soup)
The weather is very warm.
Chicken broth is comforting.
Sweetness - Sweetness (from the Latin dulcor, dulce. Sweetness applies to the kindness of treatment of a person. Sweetness is used to talk about the level of sensation of the sweetness of some foods)
Elena is a sweet person.
The sweetness of strawberries is very special.
Improvement - Improvement (Both derived from best. Amelioration is used to talk about the state of health. Improvement refers to the arrangements that are made on a person or thing)
Ernesto has presented an improvement in his state of health.
The improvements to the Historic Center were urgent.
Father - Pattern (Both from Latin pater: father. Father applies to the head of the family, whom he raises the children together with the mother. Employer is the boss or owner of a workshop or job, the one who pays and takes care of business relationships)
His father is a respectable man.
The employer is considerate of his workers.
2. Example of paronyms with similarity in form:
Fitness - Attitude (Aptitude is the physical or intellectual ability to perform a job or activity. Attitude is the disposition of a person to relate to others or to face a job or adversity)
Oscar has the aptitude for the job.
You have to have a positive attitude in life.
Affection - Effect (Affection is a feeling towards another person, animal or thing. Effect refers to the consequence of a physical or moral action; also refers to personal items [personal effects])
Juan is fond of Maria.
Every cause has an effect.
Session - Section (Session: Meeting of two or more people to analyze something or to make a resolution. Section: Part of a whole)
The managers are in a session to discuss the new project.
The cleaning supplies section is located in the next hallway.
Adopt - Adapt (Adopt: make something your own: customs, ideas; make legally one's own a foreign child, usually an orphan. Adapt: Conditioning an object to fulfill a function; conditioning to a new environment)
My sister decided to adopt a girl.
I am going to adapt a motorcycle engine to the mower.
3. Example of paronyms with similarity in pronunciation:
Hundred - Temple. (One hundred: Number, one hundred units. Temple: Lateral part of the head, between the eye and the ear)
Today I spent 100 pesos on food.
Mario hit himself on the temple with a pipe.
Swedes - Clogs (Swedish: inhabitant of Sweden. Clog: Rigid wooden footwear)
How handsome are the Swedes!
I have some clog-style shoes.
House hunting (House: Home, place where people live. Hunting: action of hunting, animals that are captured or killed in a hunt)
Fernando lives at his parents' house.
The men went hunting for pigeons.
Insane - minded (Insane: person with altered states of consciousness due to illness or mental deterioration. Of mind: refers to the ideas, attitudes or thoughts of a person)
The old man considered him insane.
My aunt is a closed-minded person.
