Collective nouns

The collective nouns, or collective words, are those nouns that allude to a set, usually indeterminate, of objects or individuals of any species, without being a plural word. For example: herd, chorus, mall.

The collective nouns generally refer to groups of animals, others to groups of people with a certain trade or characteristic, even some are relatively nonspecific, acquiring precision when analyzed in context or added to a specifier.

These nouns are opposed to individual nouns, which are those that refer to entities that are presented in isolation. To give rise to the formation of a collective noun it is necessary that it be a discrete or finite entity, since the entities massive (such as, for example, “air” or “fire”), whose limits cannot be specified, cannot be agglutinated through a noun collective.

On the other hand, although its character already gives an idea of ​​plurality, collective nouns they admit plurals, since they can account for several clusters. For example: flocks, herds, troops.
