Example of Demonstrative Pronouns
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
Pronouns are the words that help us to refer to the subject without mentioning it. In addition to personal pronouns, there are other types of words that also serve as pronouns. Among them are the demonstratives.
Demonstratives are generally used in their adjective function, indicating where something or someone is in relation to who is speaking. When we use a demonstrative instead of the subject, it serves as a pronoun.
What are the demonstrative pronouns in Spanish?
- This this these these.
- That - that - those - those.
- That one those ones.
Although it is a rule to stress these words when used as a pronoun, there is sometimes confusion in their use.
How to know if it is an adjective or a demonstrative pronoun?
To find out if a demonstrative is an adjective or a pronoun, we must take into account the following:
If there is a noun immediately before or after, then it is an adjective:
- These cars are new (adjective).
- These they are new (pronoun).
If they are modified by a qualifying adjective, they function as an adjective. If they are modified by a quantitative adjective, they work as a pronoun.
- Those yellows are mine (adjective).
- All those they are yours (pronoun).
- Those three they are very naughty (pronoun).
One way to determine if a demonstrative works as an adjective or as a pronoun is to see if it can be replaced by an article or eliminated, without modifying the sentence:
- These cars are new - Cars are new (adjective).
- Those The garden is cute - The garden is cute (Adjective).
- Those they weigh a lot - - weigh a lot (Pronoun).
- This is useful - - is useful (Pronoun).
The demonstrative pronoun can function in the sentence as a subject, direct object, or indirect object:
- East it's mine (subject).
- Ana Maria continues with that (indirect object).
- There were many clocks. I bought this (direct object).
It can also be used in subordinate clauses. When in a paragraph there is a main sentence made up of coordinated sentences with different subjects, in the sentence, when the Subordinate clause is made up of other coordinated clauses, each of the subjects can be replaced by a pronoun demonstrative. The demonstrative pronoun will indicate whether the subject of the first subordinate clause is that of the second or that of the first of the main clause.
Cervantes was the main writer of Spain and Shakespeare that of England.
- East he wrote "Romeo and Juliet", That wrote "the Entremeses".
