Relative Sentences
The relative sentences They are those subordinate structures that are inserted in the sentence introduced by a relative pronoun. For example: Trip that you promised me never happened.
They are also called subordinate adjective clauses because they fulfill the function of adjective, since they modify the noun which is as antecedent. In reality they are not sentences, but propositions subordinate to a main sentence, within a compound sentence.
There are two kinds of relative clauses:
The pronouns that introduce the relative sentences are the following: what, where, when, how much, how, who, which Y whose. These last three with their corresponding variations in number or gender and number. Several of these pronouns can head the relative clause associated with a preposition, What on, to, to or from with. For example:The man who I fell in love with lives in Uruguay.
Relative sentences are widely used in everyday life, since it is common that we need to make clarifications or specifications about what we are saying and by using these structures we avoid having to repeat several words.
