Sentences With Unspoken Subject
Spanish Classes / / July 04, 2021
They are called sentences with unspoken subject to the sentences in which eThe subject does not appear explicitly but must be inferred from morphological elements of the sentence.
This type of subject is also known as omitted, elliptical, or implicit subject. The names with which this type of subject is categorized tell us about its nature. The tacit or the implicit is something that is present but not obviously or entirely perceptible; it is something that must be understood due to the context and different elements.
In the case of the unspoken subject the element that helps us to infer the subject is the verb. Let us remember that the verb of a sentence always agrees with the subject: the verb is conjugated according to the grammatical person (I, you, he, we, etc.) and the number (singular or plural) that corresponds to the subject. Then, the verb will always indicate in its conjugation which grammatical person is being spoken of. For example, the verb I go out corresponds to the pronoun
me: I go; the verb will you say corresponds to the pronoun your: you will say; the verb: we practice corresponds to the pronoun U.S: we practice, etc. That is why the subject can be omitted and still it is possible to know which grammatical person performs the action. Although the subject is not present, the sentence has a complete meaning. Let's see some explained examples:
- Ate a salad before the main course. The verb tells us that the implicit subject is they or your: They / you ate a salad before the main course.
- I bought various items on sale. The verb tells us that the implicit subject is the pronoun me: I bought several items on sale.
This type of subject can be found in paragraphs in which there are several sentences that refer to the same subject. The subject is mentioned in the first sentenceand later, for stylistic or practical reasons, omitted in the following sentences because the reader already knows what is being talked about. For example:
- The movie The Godfather II was released in 1974. It has been made (implicit subject: The film The Godfather II) under the production and direction of Francis Ford Coppola.
