The collective nouns they are used to designate a set of objects, people or animals. For example: flock (set of sheep) pack (set of dogs), library (set of books).
Collective nouns should not be confused with any noun that is in plural. For example: the noun dog has its plural dogs, but pack is a collective noun that is used to name a group of dogs. In turn, pack can be singular or plural (packs) if there were many groups.
A collective noun, or collective word, can then designate or represent several individual nouns.
