The preposition "by" is used synonymously with "through", "instead of", and "in exchange for". It is also used to indicate cause, frequency, medium, a period of time and the agent complement of the passive voice. For example: I play tennis once for week. / She calls me for telephone.
The prepositions are links that relate the different elements of a sentence and are used to indicate origin, provenance, address, destination, medium, reason or possession.
Like all prepositions, "By" is invariable (that is, it has neither gender nor number).
