Example of Sentences With Subject, Predicate And Verb
Spanish Classes / / September 13, 2021
The subject and the predicate are the two main components of any bimembre prayer. The subject is the entity that performs the action (therefore, answer the questionwho?), while the predicate is what is said about the subject; therefore, in a bimembre sentence there is someone (subject) who performs or suffers something (predicate). For instance:
- "The characters (subject) are transformed throughout the work (predicate)": the subject performs the action of the predicate (Who are transformed?).
- "The fruit seller (subject) prepared us a watermelon pot (predicate)": the subject performs the action of the predicate (Who prepared us?).
As for the verbs, these are very important in any sentence, since they define the actions relative to the subject. The most important verb in the sentence is the core of the predicate, This verb is the one that tells us what action the subject performs or suffers, so it is a verb that has agreement in person and number with the subject. For example, if we take the previous sentences:
- "Characters they transform (core of the predicate) throughout the work ”: the main verb agrees in person and number with the subject (3rd person plural): they transform.
Subject types:
- Implied subject: is the one that has to be inferred from the predicate, since it does not appear directly in the sentence, for example: "We are best friends" (subject: U.S).
- Explicit subject: is the one that appears expressly in the sentence, for example: “Pedro and Me we are best friends"
- Agent subject: is the subject who performs the verbal action directly, for example: "The technician repaired the air conditioning "
- Patient subject: is the subject who suffers the verbal action, is a recipient, for example: "The air conditioning it was repaired by the technician "
- Simple subject: is the one that is composed of a single nucleus (a noun or name): "Ana she's very mad"
- Composite subject: is the one that has two or more nuclei (nouns or names) united by means of conjunctions, for example: “Ana, Paola and Diana they are very angry "
Predicate types:
- Nominal predicate: the nucleus is a copulative verb (be be or seem) that links the subject with an attribute that gives it some property or characteristic. For example: “You They are my best friends"," This milk she seems to be spoiled”.
- Verbal predicate: the nucleus is a predicative verb (any verb that is not copulative) that indicates an action with complete meaning, for example: “Los Niños they played house", "U.S we would go on a long journey”.
