When we want to compare two English nouns, we use the comparative degrees, called comparative and superlative, and these in turn, we can divide them according to their level of comparison, in comparatives of superiority, inferiority or equality.
The comparative It serves to indicate a degree of comparison between two nouns, and indicates that one of the nouns has an attribute to a greater or lesser degree than the one with which it is compared.
Examples of Adjectives and Superlatives in English:
This tree is bigger than that. (This tree is bigger than that one)
My car is faster than yours
My sister is more beautiful than Robert’s (My sister is more beautiful than Roberto’s)
The superlative is the degree of comparison between two or more nouns, or between a singular noun and a plural or collective noun, indicating that the attribute has the highest degree of those with which it is compared.
That tree is the biggest in the city
The Veyron is the fastest car of Bugattis
My sister is the most beautiful girl in the school. (My sister is the prettiest in school)
Rules for forming the comparative and the superlative
- Monosyllabic adjectives:
To form the comparative and the superlative of monosyllabic adjectives, we will add the particles –er for the comparative, and –est for the superlative:
- Adjective: Strong
- Shared: Stronger
- Superlative: Strongest
- Adjective: Old
- Comparative: Older
- Superlative Oldest
- Adjective: High
- Comparative: Higher
- Superlative: Highest
When adjectives end in y, it is changed to i; when they end with the letters b, d, g, n, p, t, the last letter is doubled. Some two-syllable adjectives with –er, -y, -ow, -le endings with an accent on the last syllable, also admit the addition of –er and –est:

- Finally, the rest of the adjectives formed by two or more syllables, use the following formulas:

My computer is as fast as tours (My computer is as fast as yours)
That building is as antique as this one. (That building is as old as this)
you are as intelligent as Mary. (Are as smart as Mary)
Comparative of superiority: It is formed with the formula:… more (adjective) than… (more… than):
My car is more expensive than yours. (My car is more expensive than yours)
The snakes are more dangerous than crocodiles (Snakes are more dangerous than crocodiles.
Play football is more interesting than study Chemistry more interesting than to study chemistry).
Comparative of inferiority: It is formed with the formula:… less (adjective) than… (less… than):
Acrylic is less transparent than glass. (Acrylic is less transparent than Glass).
A generic remote control, is less expensive than the original (A generic remote control, it is less expensive than the original)
Coffe is less nutritiuos than chocolate (Coffee is less nutritious than the chocolate).
Superlative of superiority. It is formed with the structure… the most (adjective)… (the most):
This pen was the most expensive in the store (This pen was the mask in the shop)
The most important part of dance, is music (The most important part of the dance, it's the music)
The most precious jewel, is diamond (The most precious jewel, it's the diamond)
Superlative of inferiority. Use the structure… the least (adjective)… (the least):
This trip is the least pleasant I have. (This trip is the least pleasant that I had)
Today is the least overcast day in two months less cloudy in two months)
John is the least enthusiastic member of the team (Juan is the member less enthusiastic of the team.
