The suffix -itis, of Greek origin, initially formed words with the meaning "disease that affects", but nowadays it denotes "inflammation". For instance: appendicitis, cephalitis, cabbageitis.
The suffixes they are morphemes, that is, small units that are added to the end of a word to change its meaning.
