    Example of Infinitive Phrases in English (Infinitive Phrases)

    The infinitive phrase in English It is a grammatical structure composed of an infinitive verb, with the structure to + verb, to which objects and complements are added. It can function in the sentence as a direct object, noun, adjective, or adverb.

    To know what function an infinitive phrase fulfills within the sentence, we can observe what question it answers:

    What or who is talking about? - It works as a noun.
    What, how much, how is it? - It works as an adjective.
    How when where? - It works as an adverb.

    To illustrate the above, we will use the verb to work: to work. To this infinitive verb an object and a modifier, to form an infinitive phrase: to work harder everyday.

    • To work harder everyday is the secret of prosperity. (What or who is talking about? To work harder every day. Here the phrase works as a noun).
    • My motivation to work harder everyday is achieve my goals (what motivation? Work harder every day. Here the phrase works as an adjective).
    • James gets a job and the Monday began to work harder everyday

      (How did James start his work on Monday? working harder every day. Here the phrase works as an Adverb).

    In addition, the infinitive phrase can also function as a direct object, indirect object or subordinate clause:

    • Josephine studies hard to win her medicine license (direct object)
    • Esteban runs everyday around the city to win the marathon. (indirect object)
    • To be honest, I don't recognize her when she came in with blue and pink hair. (subordinate clause)

    Example of infinitive phrases in English (infinitive phrases):

    1. To be intelligent is the goal of all students.
    2. Find clothes to adjust you well, is so difficult.
    3. Yo quiero to finish the course soon, to come back home for Christmas.
    4. Not ever we can to win ever.
    5. Sometimes, to loose is better to win.
    6. Never mind how many time you get down, to wake up is the only important.
    7. To have good notes sometimes is not easy.
    8. When i want to eat healthy, I like to take green tea.
    9. Yesterday my uncle bring me to buy a gift.
    10. My family growth vegetables to have food all year long.
    11. An infinitive phrase is able to take different uses in the sentence.
    12. One phrase may come to be a subordinate sentence.
