Spanish Classes / / November 09, 2021
The sharp wordsare those that have the prosodic accent on the last syllable; this means that the last syllable is tonic, so it is pronounced with more relief. For example in will love (a - ma - rá), the strongest syllable is rá.
The acute words carry accent or spelling accent (´) in certain cases according to their accentuation rulesOne of these rules is that sharp words that end in a vowel always have an accent. They also have an accent when they end in n or s. The tilde will be placed over the stressed vowel, for example:
- Dad (pa - pa): the word has an accent because it is a sharp word that ends in the vowel á
- I discovered (des - cu - brí): the word has an accent because it is a sharp word that ends in the vowel í
Many of the sharp words ending in a vowel are conjugated verbs in the past or future, for instance I decided (de - ci - dí), I will learn (a - pren - de - ré), will accompany (a - com - pa - ña - rá), bought (com - prot)
According to its accentuation, we also find the following words:
- Serious words: they are words that have the accentuation on the penultimate syllable, and carry an accent if they end in a consonant except n o For example: touch (tác - til), weak (from - bil).
- Words esdrújulas: are words that have the accentuation on the third to last syllable, and always carry an accent, for example, in fractious (day - co - lo), music (mú - yes - ca).
- Words sobreesdrújulas: these are words that have the accentuation on a syllable before the penultimate, and always carry an accent, for example, in ask them (pre - gún - ta - se - los).
