Verbs with Double Participle
Like the infinitive and the gerund, the participle is a non-personal form of the verb. This means that it fulfills the functions of adjective and supports typical verb modifiers.
In its regular form, the participle is constructed by adding to the verb root suffixes -ado or -ido. For instance: Saltgone, contadored. Although there are also irregular participles, formed with the endings -cho, -to and -so. For instance: gavecho, roto, preSW.
In addition, on some occasions, the evolution of the language has led to the creation of regular forms of participles for verbs that already had an irregular participle. At present, the only verbs with double participle, regular and irregular, are three:
to print (printed / printed) | fry (fried / fried) | provide (provided / provided) |
It should be noted that, in these cases, the two variants of the participle can be used interchangeably in the conjugation of compound verbs. For instance: We had not printed The document. / We had not printed The document.
Even so, in these cases the irregular form is the most used in the conjugation and it is also the only one admitted as an adjective. For instance: Bananas are eaten in many American countries fried.
Irregular particulars used only as adjectives
Previously, irregular participles were considered to be certain adjectives derived from Latin participles or that once fulfilled that function in the past of the Spanish language. However, the Royal Spanish Academy determined that, since these terms serve only as an adjective and not they can be used interchangeably in the construction of compound verbs, they will be considered simply adjectives. In other cases, one of the forms is no longer used, so they are no longer a real alternative for speakers.
