The formalism It is a way of conducting research that consists of using a scientific method or a set of formulas with precision and accuracy.

Formalism can also consist of perceiving certain objects of study taking into account only the formal aspect, that is, the structure or organization of the content.

In relation to these two definitions, within certain disciplines, there are schools or currents that are formalist. For instance: Russian formalism, formalism in architecture, formalism in ethics.

Examples of formalism

1. Formalism in art theory. It is a current within art that consists of making or studying plastic art taking into account the form and not so much the content. In other words, how the work is done is more important than its idea or concept. In addition, there are theorists who maintain that the content is studied, but that it is always subordinate to the form.
2. Russian formalism. It is a literary theory, the first to be conceived as such, which proposed to study and delimit what is specific to literature (literariness) and what differentiates it from other types of texts or speeches. According to this theory, the difference had to do with the literary form, because it is the only use of language that is capable of producing a strangeness in the perception of an object.

3. Formalism in architecture. It is an architectural trend that assumes that the form of the construction, that is, the aesthetic design is more important than the function. For example, the placement of windows can be determined by symmetry (a formal aspect) and not so much by the use it will have (the function).
4. Formalism in ethics (philosophy). This theory assumes that an ethical action is correlated with rational law, that is, that an act of a person is determined by the formal aspects (the intention of the person) and not by the material aspects (the fact itself and its consequences).
5. Formalism in law. It is a current of the philosophy of law that is linked to positivism and that assumes that all laws are valid for the mere fact of being laws. Then, the judicial system is complete and valid and can respond to all the problems that arise in relation to justice.
6. Formalism in mathematics. It is a current of the philosophy of mathematics that states that mathematics can work at an abstract level, that is, only symbols can be used, without the need for these symbols to have a reference in the reality. For this theory, what is important is the shape of these symbols, that is, their rules of use, and not the entity they represent.
