Example of Plural Words in English
The plural form of most nouns is created by simply adding the letter s.
For example
1. snake = snakes
2. pepper = peppers
3. onion = onions
4. oyster = oysters
5. computer = computers
6. dog = dogs
7. cat = cats
8. file = files
9. door = doors
10. game = games
Words that end in –ch, x, s, or sound like s at the end, will require adding an –es suffix to the plural:
For example:
1. witch = witches
2. box = boxes
3. gas = gases
4. bus = buses
5. kiss = kisses
6. sandwich = sandwiches
7. switch = switches
8. fax = faxes
9. fox = foxes
10. fuse = fuses
There are several nouns that have form irregular plural. The plural formed in this way are called mutated plurals, or mutating plurals.
For example:
1. child = children
2. woman = women
3. man = men
4. person = people
5. mouse = mice
And finally there are certain nouns that keep their Latin or Greek form in plural.
For example:
1. nucleus = nuclei
2. syllabus = syllabi
3. focus = foci
4. fungus = fungi
5. cactus = cacti (cactuses is also accepted)
6. thesis = theses
7. crisis = crises
8. phenomenom = phenomena
9. index = indexes (indexes are also accepted)
10. appendix = appendices (appendixes is also accepted)
Many nouns seem to be in plural but they just take a singular verb, such as by example:
1. The news is good.
2. Gymmnastics is boring to watch
3. Mathematics is difficult.
4. Statistics is easy.
5. Economics is said to be difficult.
Numeral expressions are generally singular, but can be plural whether individuals within the numerical group are acting individually
1. Two thousand dollars is a lot of Money
2. Seventy percent of the students have voted already.
3. One Half of the faculty is retiring this summer.
And many nouns appear to be in the singular form, but they take a plural form and a plural verb is always used, such as:
1. My pants are dirty.
2. The glasses have slipped down his nose again
3. Her scissors were stolen.
When a noun names the title of something, or a word is being used as a word it is singular, whether the word takes the singular form or not:
For example:
1. Faces is the name of my restaurant
2. Okies is a good brand
3. Postcards is my favorite novel.
