The apostrophe (In Spanish apostrophe is a literary form, so you should avoid using this word in Spanish to refer to the sign spelling), called apostrophe in English, is a spelling sign similar to a single quotation mark (‘), and has three functions major in English:

When used with a singular word, the apostrophe and the letter "s" ('s) are written, even when the word ends with the letter s.
