In Spain there are different official languages, as well as different political sensitivities regarding the idea of homeland. Euzkadi or the Basque Country is an autonomous region in which the Basque Nationalist Party or PNV has played a leading role since the first democratic elections in 1977 (since then it has been the political party with more popular support in this territory).
Symbols and ideology
While it is a formation politics with a tradition Catholic, in its statutes it is declared non-denominational. From its origins it has claimed the Basque homeland as an independent territory from Spain and this includes the current Basque Country plus three regions of southern France known as Iparralde in Euskera. The ikurriña is the flag of the PNV and, at the same time, it is the flag of this autonomous region. On the other hand, the peneuvistas consider the Tree of Guernica as a symbol from his National identity.
The PNV defends a united Europe integrated by the natural communities that make it up and not by nations. The defense of culture and
language Basque are essential elements of the peneuvistas. The PNV is considered a nationalist and conservative party. He is currently present in parliament autonomous Basque, in the autonomous parliament of Navarre and in the national parliament. To defend the independence of Spain, the PNV claims a history and an identity of the Basque people
To understand the nationalist demands of the PNV, we can mention a series of aspects:
- The Basque people are one of the oldest in Europe and have preserved their language and culture for thousands of years.
- From the Middle Ages The Basques have maintained their own rules (the so-called fueros) with some interruptions and at some moments in history they have had their own currency and army,
- In the 19th century, the Basque territory received the arrival of thousands of Spaniards in search of work in the industry and this fact generated a nationalist reaction among the Basques that led to the founding of the PNV in 1895,
- During the Franco regime, Euskera and Basque culture were repressed, but the members of the PNV maintained their political aspirations and their organization from exile.
