In recent years, citizen demand through symbols has become fashionable. Usually an object or garment with a striking color is used to express an idea. In the case of Orange Day, this color is used on T-shirts, ties or simply painting hands to denounce the violence against women and girls.
This is a campaign promoted by the UN and launched in 2008 with the slogan "join."
The purpose of this conference is to raise awareness among the population on the abuses suffered by women and girls in all kinds of social contexts, such as the home, the work environment or social networks.
On November 25, 1960, the Mirabal sisters were assassinated by hitmen sent by the dictator of the Dominican Republic Rafael LeĆ³nidas Trujillo.
Initially, the day chosen to express this idea was November 25, since on this date the murder of three young Dominican women who opposed the dictatorship from Trujillo. However, Orange Day is currently commemorated on the 25th of every month of the year.
The objective of this conference is threefold: raise awareness, prevent and report
It is necessary to raise awareness about violence against women and girls because it is a phenomenon widespread throughout the planet and because only if an unfair reality is known is it possible eradicate it. Steps need to be taken to prevent any form of abuse that attempts against women and girls. And of course, it is absolutely necessary to report any event related to violence against women.
Data of interest
Orange Day reminds us that millions of women around the world are unprotected against different forms of violence. Some data is especially striking.
According to the WHO, one in three women has been the victim of some aggression sexual or physical, half of murders of women are carried out by their romantic partners, genital mutilation female affects more than 130 million girls and more than 200 million girls are forced to marry before they turn 18 years.
This reality does not have a local or territorial dimension, but the UN has considered that it is a pandemic, that is, a disease social that spreads all over the world. However, it is in poor countries where violence against women and girls is most intense and evident.
The Orange Day message is addressed to all humanity, but in a very special way to governments, the media, communication, to civil society and to women's associations.
