The acronym PGR stands for Attorney General of the Republic, a institution which in Mexico has broad powers: to fight crime, to guarantee the safety national and promote legislative reforms. This organ is integrated into the executive power of the nation, the highest representative of him is the attorney general of the state and his powers are oriented towards the social interest and the general welfare of the country.
For the execution of its powers, the PGR is organized according to a hierarchical structure with specialized units for the prosecution of the different types of crime and, at the same time, with an organizational system that coordinates the different delegations distributed throughout the territory national. The head of this institution is the Attorney General of the Republic, who is appointed by the president of the nation and, in parallel, is ratified by the Senate.
Crime prevention and prosecution
Its maximum person in charge is the one who presides over the Public Ministry of the federation that makes up Mexico. Its main function is the prosecution of crimes and, in this sense, the PGR has the obligation to prevent crime, receive complaints from citizens about alleged criminal actions, order and coordinate police action and the
investigation that must be carried out and promote actions to repair the damage. Likewise, the PGR supervises and organizes criminal action and provides legal support for the police to carry out their functions in accordance with the legality.In short, this body has the role of ensuring that police measures against criminals are carried out term with all the necessary legal guarantees, since the PGR has as a general principle the respect of the Rights Humans.
The PGR and national security
Although the prosecution of crimes is the genuine function of the PGR, national security is a fundamental aspect of this state agency. In this sense, it deals with everything related to information that affects national security (maintenance of databases, custody of information of general interest and the coordination with other institutions that ensure the security of the country).
The PGR and legislative reforms
When a possible legislative reform on related issues is proposed in the Mexican parliament with national security, the PGR has the power to give its opinion in those matters that are of its competence.
