How To Say Goodnight In English
English / / July 04, 2021
We use the expression good night both to say hello and to say goodbye.
When we say good night as a greeting, especially in the early hours, let's say something like before 9 or 10 at night, we use good evening:
Good evening. I got a date with doctor at half past eight.
Good evening. Has someone asked for me?
When we say good night in a more formal way, as well as to say goodbye, we use good night:
Good night, my name is Jack. Do you know where Whitechapel is?
Thanks for hear this conference. See you next time. Good night.
On many occasions the abbreviated form is used as a greeting nights. This form is widely used in Great Britain. In this case it is always used in the plural:
Nights, lady. Do you know what time is it?
Nights, Sir. Come over here, please.
It is also common to use a diminutive of night: nite. The expression good nite is an informal expression that is used the same as good night or good evening, mainly in familiar or highly trusted environments:
I go to sleep. Good nite, daddy!
This was a good party. Good nite everyone!
When we use good night as a farewell, we can add some expression of gratitude or good wishes:
Thanks, ladies and gentlemen. Good night and good luck!
That’s all from now. Good night and thank you.
Some phrases can also be interpreted as "good night", especially related to the moment of going to sleep:
Sweet dreams!
See you tomorrow!
Dream with angels.
Till tomorrow!
