The augmentative nouns are a kind of nouns that express a great intensity or size of what they name, be it a person, animal or object. These nouns are formed from other nouns, to which an ending is added to form the augmentative.
Augmentative nouns are formed with the following augmentative suffixes:
- -brown: cloud (augmentative noun of cloud), gale (augmentative noun of wind)
- -azo: great goal (augmentative noun of goal), librazo (augmentative noun of book)
- -on: pigheaded (augmentative noun of head), mansion (augmentative noun of House)
- -ote, -ota: book (augmentative noun of book), expletive (augmentative noun of word)
As we can see, the augmentative noun is formed from a noun of which the root is kept and the suffix is added to increase the qualities, or characteristics of the noun. On the contrary, there are also diminutive nouns, which express a smaller size by adding diminutive suffixes to the root of the noun (for example, little boy).
