Importance of the Mediterranean Sea
Miscellanea / / August 08, 2023
It is one of the most precious bodies of water on our planet for being part of the Asian, European, and African, and for being for them, from legendary times until today, a leading area of intense and fruitful transactions commercial and cultural.
Its waters not only bathe the coasts of Europe, but it is also a connection of this continent with Africa, and also allows reaching up to Asia, ending on its western flank in the Atlantic Ocean, although it is usually considered as a body of water independent of it, thus receiving its name that indicates that it is surrounded by land.
In ancient times where the Roman empire was a world power, this area was known as Mare Nostrum, since in full swing all the coasts that were bathed by the waters of the current Mediterranean Sea were under their power, although the truth is that this area was already the power of great ancient civilizations, such as the Phoenicians who used it to trade their expertise in pottery and viticulture, being the latter where they stood out widely.
Another of the great powers of yesteryear, the Ancient Greece, had in the Mediterranean Sea and all the Greek seas that flowed there not only a source of inspiration for the philosophers that transited its shores, but also the geographical location of Myths and legends whose protagonists had battles, and even mythological beings that inhabited the depth of its waters.
During World War II, this area captured the attention of Mussolini, who tried to dominate it, given its strategic benefits. For its part, Great Britain appeared to be responsible for the Eastern Mediterranean from its presence in Egypt, and France prevailed in the Western area.
Main commercial and cultural route of the planet
Its mercantile value has been the reason for bloody disputes throughout history and the "house" it saw flourish to the most outstanding civilizations of Western history: Greece, Rome, Egypt, among others.
Point of tourist interest and emblem of biodiversity
It houses relevant ports: Valencia, Genoa, Venice, the Balearic Islands, Barcelona, Livorno, Santorini, among others, providing these cities with tourist benefits unique, being safe and obligatory destinations for many cruise ships that transit through there, plus the aforementioned advantages for the commercialization of local products and foreigners
Tourism chooses it and turns massively to its shores due to the unbeatable climate it offers: lots of sun and temperate temperatures that allow you to spend long hours on its beaches, which also stand out for presenting landscapes dreamlike.
The characteristic bluish color of its waters make it unique and have endowed its coasts with an original beauty, especially on the Greek and Croatian islands.
It is inserted in a benchmark area in terms of biodiversity for which the variety of its flora and fauna is fantastic.
irresponsible human incursion
Although there is legislation that regulates its conservation, it is not exempt from natural and human hostilities that affect to the entire planet: pollution, global warming, overfishing, and highly destructive practices in this sense.
Fishing activity has multiplied ostensibly and exceeds what the waters support.
Careless tourism and industrial activities have increased the levels of contamination of its waters.
For his part, he climate change increased the degree of salt and temperature of the water.
And as if this were not enough, this new century added a new problem to those mentioned: the humanitarian one.
The migratory crisis that affects Europe is the most important since the Second World War and seems to have no end at the moment, nor political solutions.
A sea of migrant tragedies
The Mediterranean Sea is frequently the scene of tragic stories of migrants fleeing from war and famine, and who also die during their escape attempt.
And once again politics behaves meanly and indifferently in the face of a tremendous scourge.
In the week of June 23, 2018, there was a case of a ship, with more than 200 migrants on board, which was not allowed to entry into neither Malta nor Italy, remaining stranded in a political limbo of indifference to the indignation of the protectors of human rights.
Precisely, Italy exposes and maintains its position with such a decision, corresponding to the government of Sergio Mattarella, which assumed the first of June 2018, holding a strong ultranationalist and xenophobic message, without trying to find solutions to a critical situation that is repeated.
Thus, a large part of Europe that at the beginning showed itself to be humane in the face of the problem, giving refuge and opportunities to these people, today, openly exhibits its miseries and lack of humanity.
