Importance of Semiology
Miscellanea / / August 08, 2023
Understood as one of the most important and complex sciences in the area of communications, semiotics is relatively new compared to other more traditional and hard sciences. Semiology is based on the study and analysis of discourse, focusing on the signs and symbols that it uses but not on its meaning. This is so because the different semiological theories maintain that the meaning is something artificially given to the symbol and that it can vary according to the history, community, people, etc.
Semiology as a discipline of knowledge.
In the area of the communication, semiology is a discipline central and very important because it has to do with the ways in which the individuals of a community communicate and give value to the different symbols of discourse. When we talk about symbols we do not refer only to the drawings or graphics that can be used (for example, the logo of a brand) but also all the elements that surround us and that we understand symbolically, for example a traffic light
in red. For semiology, the act of communication occurs in semiosis, the central event of its study.Semiosis is the moment in which an idea or concept becomes something significant not only for those who elaborates it but for its interlocutor, for example the creation of words and the production of texts writings. Like all the human and social sciences, semiology has a method and ways of working that are not so strict as those of the hard sciences and that is why they can be adapted to different realities social.
Why pay attention to semiology.
Semiology is perhaps not one of the most easily recognizable sciences at a general level, its object of study is diffuse, unclear and abstract. This often means that the importance of semiology in our daily lives is not taken into account. Its importance lies in the fact that it is the one that analyzes the way in which the human being communicates through symbols and complex symbol structures that take a long time to understand.
This, which seems so natural, the fact of speaking and communicating, is a complex and difficult task that the human being has been developing since the dawn of history and has reached levels of extreme complexity. In addition, semiology is interested in the different forms of discourse and communication in the arts such as cinema, theater, etc.
